DIY Eco-Packing Supplies List

Traditional packing materials such as bubble wrap, Styrofoam peanuts, and cardboard boxes are often made from non-renewable resources and contribute to waste. Reusable Packing Materials​

1. Furoshiki Wrapping Cloth​

A versatile piece of cloth that can be used as a wrapping material for fragile items, reducing the need for bubble wrap and paper.

  • Time to make: None (use an existing scarf or cloth)

2. Newspaper and Cardboard Box Bundles​

Create bundles using old newspapers and cardboard boxes to protect fragile items during shipping.

Materials needed:​

  • Old newspapers
  • Cardboard boxes

Instructions:​

  • Cut the newspaper into long strips
  • Wrap the strips around the item, securing with twine or string if necessary
  • Place the wrapped item inside a sturdy cardboard box for extra protection

3. Reusable Stuffed Envelope​

A cloth bag filled with paper shreds or soft fabric scraps that can be used to cushion items during shipping.

Materials needed:​

  • Old clothes or fabric scraps
  • Paper shreds
  • Needle and thread (for sewing)

Instructions:​

  • Cut the fabric into small pieces
  • Fill an old envelope with the fabric scraps
  • Sew the top of the envelope to keep its contents in place

4. Wooden Crates​

Upcycle old wooden crates for use as shipping boxes, reducing waste and providing a sturdy base for fragile items.

Materials needed:​

  • Old wooden crates (e.g., wine boxes)
  • Wood glue
  • Nails or screws
  • Sandpaper (for smoothing out the surface)

Instructions:​

  • Clean and dry the crate
  • Apply wood glue to any cracks or gaps
  • Use nails or screws to reinforce the structure, if necessary
  • Sand down the surface for a smooth finish

5. Cornstarch-Based Packing Peanuts​

A biodegradable alternative to traditional packing peanuts.

Materials needed:​

  • Cornstarch
  • Water
  • A mold or container (to shape the packing peanuts)

Instructions:​

  • Mix cornstarch and water in a bowl until you get a thick paste
  • Pour the mixture into the mold, letting it dry completely
  • Once dry, break up the resulting material into individual 'peanuts'
