Herb Infused Oils at Home
Herb infused oils have become increasingly popular in recent years due to their numerous health benefits, versatility in cooking and skincare applications, and ease of preparation. By infusing herbs into a neutral oil, such as olive or grapeseed oil, you can create a flavorful condiment that enhances the taste of various dishes while providing antioxidants and other nutrients from the herbs.
Making Your Own Herb Infused Oil
Choosing the Right Herbs
When selecting herbs to infuse in oil, consider their flavor profiles and health benefits. Popular choices include basil for its fresh, slightly sweet taste and antioxidant properties; rosemary for its piney aroma and digestive aid properties; and thyme for its earthy flavor and antimicrobial properties.
Equipment Needed
- A clean glass jar with a lid ( Mason jars work well)
- A neutral-tasting oil such as olive or grapeseed oil
- Fresh herbs of your choice
- Optional: garlic cloves, lemon slices
Instructions
- Prepare the Herbs: Clean and dry the fresh herbs to prevent mold growth in the oil.
- Combine Oil and Herbs: Place a layer of herbs in the glass jar, followed by a layer of oil, and repeat this process until all ingredients are used up.
- Add Optional Ingredients: If desired, add garlic cloves or lemon slices for added flavor.
- Seal the Jar: Close the jar tightly to prevent air from entering and spoiling the oil.
- Infuse the Oil: Place the jar in a cool, dark location, such as a pantry or cupboard, for at least 2-3 weeks. Shake the jar every few days to help release the herb flavors into the oil.
- Strain and Store: After the infusion period, strain the oil through a cheesecloth or fine-mesh sieve into another clean glass container. Discard the solids and store the infused oil in an airtight container.
Tips for Storage
- Keep the infused oil away from direct sunlight to prevent degradation of its flavor and nutritional content.
- Use within 6 months, as the quality and potency of the herb-infused oil will decrease over time.
- Label the jar with the date you made it and what type of herbs were used.
